About this exercise

The Dumbbell Power Clean is an explosive full-body lift in which you pull a pair of dumbbells from a hang or floor position up to your shoulders in one powerful movement. It develops total-body power, traps, and posterior chain strength, and serves as an accessible alternative to the barbell power clean.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs with an overhand grip
  • Hinge at the hips, pushing them back, and bend your knees slightly to load your posterior chain
  • Explosively extend your hips and knees, driving the dumbbells upward by shrugging your traps forcefully
  • As the dumbbells rise, quickly pull your elbows high and rotate them under the weights
  • Catch the dumbbells at shoulder height with your elbows pointing forward and your knees slightly bent to absorb the load
  • Stand tall to complete the rep, then lower the dumbbells under control back to the starting position
