About this exercise

The dumbbell overhead crunch on a stability ball is a weighted core exercise that combines an extended range of motion with additional resistance. Holding a dumbbell overhead while crunching on a stability ball challenges the abdominals through a greater arc than a floor crunch and recruits the core stabilizers to manage the unstable surface.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a stability ball, then walk your feet forward until your lower back is supported on the ball and your torso is slightly reclined
  • Hold a single dumbbell with both hands by one end and extend your arms overhead
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor and hips at roughly knee height
  • Exhale and curl your torso upward, bringing your chest toward your knees while keeping the dumbbell extended
  • Squeeze your abs firmly at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower back down, allowing your back to arch over the ball for a full stretch
  • Maintain a controlled tempo and avoid jerking with the arms
