Dumbbell Narrow Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Narrow Squat.

MediumQuadriceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell narrow squat places your feet closer together than a standard squat, shifting more emphasis onto the outer quadriceps while requiring greater ankle mobility and balance. Holding dumbbells at your sides allows free trunk positioning and makes the exercise accessible without a barbell rack.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet together or only slightly apart
  • Brace your core, keep your chest tall, and point your toes forward or very slightly outward
  • Push your hips back and bend your knees, lowering your body as far as your mobility allows while keeping your heels on the floor
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, then drive through your feet to stand back up
  • Keep the dumbbells close to your legs throughout the movement
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
