Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Low Windmill.

MediumObliques

About this exercise

A windmill variation where the dumbbell is held in the lower hand rather than overhead, making it slightly more accessible while still demanding oblique strength, hip mobility, and hamstring flexibility. The movement involves a lateral hinge that lengthens the obliques under load.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width and toes angled outward at about 45 degrees
  • Hold a dumbbell in one hand hanging at your side (the bottom hand)
  • Raise your free arm overhead and use it as a guide, keeping your eyes on your top hand throughout
  • Hinge laterally at the hip, sliding the dumbbell down the inside of your leg toward your foot while keeping both legs straight
  • Lower as far as your hamstring and hip flexibility allow while maintaining a neutral spine
  • Drive through your hip to return to the upright position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
