About this exercise

The dumbbell jumping squat combines a loaded squat with an explosive jump to develop lower-body power, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular conditioning. Holding dumbbells at your sides adds resistance while keeping the movement pattern natural and the torso free to extend through the jump.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Brace your core and hinge your hips back while bending your knees to descend into a squat
  • Lower until your thighs reach parallel or just below, keeping your chest up and knees tracking over your toes
  • Explosively push through your heels to jump off the floor, extending the hips, knees, and ankles fully
  • Land softly with slightly bent knees to absorb the impact, immediately transitioning into the next squat
  • Maintain control of the dumbbells throughout and avoid letting them swing forward on landing
