About this exercise

The dumbbell Jefferson curl is a controlled loaded spinal flexion exercise that stretches and strengthens the entire posterior chain, from the lower back through the hamstrings. Performed standing, you slowly round the spine vertebra by vertebra while holding dumbbells, making it an effective mobility and strength drill for the back and hamstrings. Use light weight and move deliberately.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs, feet hip-width apart
  • Begin by tucking your chin to your chest and slowly rounding your upper spine forward
  • Continue curling the spine downward, vertebra by vertebra, letting the dumbbells hang toward the floor
  • Keep a slight bend in the knees as you hinge and reach toward maximum range of motion
  • Pause at the bottom, feeling the stretch along your entire back and hamstrings
  • Slowly reverse the movement by uncurling from the base of the spine upward until fully upright
