About this exercise

The dumbbell hyperextension is a weighted lower-back exercise performed on a hyperextension bench. Holding a dumbbell against your chest adds resistance beyond bodyweight, making it an effective movement for building strength and mass in the erector spinae, glutes, and hamstrings.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the hyperextension bench so the pad sits just below your hip bones and lock your ankles under the footpads
  • Hold a dumbbell against your chest with both hands
  • Start with your torso hanging downward in a controlled position
  • Squeeze your glutes and lower back to raise your torso until your body forms a straight line from head to heels
  • Pause briefly at the top without hyperextending the lumbar spine
  • Lower your torso back down under control to the starting position
