About this exercise

The dumbbell hollow rock adds external load to the classic gymnastics hollow body position, requiring you to maintain a compressed core while rocking rhythmically on your lower back. Holding a dumbbell overhead lengthens the lever arm and intensifies the demand on the abs and deep core stabilizers.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back and hold a single dumbbell with both hands, arms extended straight overhead
  • Compress your lower back into the floor, hollow your belly, and lift your arms, head, shoulders, and straight legs off the ground simultaneously
  • Find a hollow body position where your lower back stays pressed flat against the floor
  • Initiate a controlled rock by shifting the contact point between your shoulders and hips in a rhythmic motion
  • Maintain the hollow shape throughout — do not let your lower back arch off the floor
  • Complete the desired number of rocks while keeping the dumbbell arms fully extended
