About this exercise

The dumbbell full swing is a hip-dominant power exercise modeled after the kettlebell swing, performed with a dumbbell held with both hands. The explosive hip hinge propels the dumbbell from between the thighs to overhead, training the posterior chain, core, and shoulder stability simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding one dumbbell vertically with both hands at the top end
  • Hinge at the hips and let the dumbbell swing back between your legs, keeping the back flat
  • Drive the hips forward explosively to propel the dumbbell upward in a smooth arc
  • Allow the momentum to carry the dumbbell overhead to full arm extension, staying on your heels
  • Control the dumbbell as it swings back down, hinge at the hips again, and flow into the next repetition
