About this exercise

The dumbbell front squat is a squat variation where dumbbells are held at shoulder height, shifting the load to the front of the body. This front-loaded position demands a more upright torso and places greater emphasis on the quadriceps compared to a standard back squat.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, elbows pointing forward
  • Keep your chest up, spine neutral, and core braced
  • Initiate the squat by pushing your hips back and bending your knees simultaneously
  • Descend until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor, keeping your torso as upright as possible
  • Keep your knees tracking over your toes throughout the descent
  • Drive through your heels and mid-foot to stand back up to the starting position
  • Maintain the dumbbells at shoulder height and your elbows elevated throughout the movement
