About this exercise

Dumbbell finger curls isolate the flexor muscles of the forearms and fingers by rolling a dumbbell down to the fingertips and curling it back up. The exercise builds grip strength, finger flexor endurance, and forearm thickness — qualities valuable for lifting, climbing, and racket sports.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a bench and hold a dumbbell in each hand with a palms-up grip, wrists resting at the edge of your knees
  • Relax your fingers and let the dumbbells roll down toward the fingertips under control
  • Curl your fingers back to a full grip, then flex your wrists upward slightly at the top
  • Lower back to the fingertip position in a slow, controlled manner
  • Keep your forearms flat on your thighs throughout the movement
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
