About this exercise

The Dumbbell External Rotation is an isolation exercise targeting the rotator cuff muscles, particularly the infraspinatus and teres minor at the rear of the shoulder. It is commonly used for shoulder health, injury prevention, and rehabilitation, as well as improving stability in pressing and throwing movements.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a bench or the floor, holding a light dumbbell in your top hand
  • Bend the top elbow to 90 degrees and tuck it against your side
  • Keeping your elbow locked at 90 degrees and your upper arm still, rotate your forearm upward away from your body
  • Raise the dumbbell until your forearm is vertical or just past parallel to the floor
  • Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
  • Use a light weight and focus on controlled movement rather than momentum
