About this exercise

The dumbbell decline fly is an isolation exercise that stretches and contracts the lower chest by sweeping dumbbells in a wide arc on a decline bench. The decline angle targets the lower pectoral fibers more directly than a flat or incline fly.

How to Perform

  • Secure your feet at the top of a decline bench and lie back holding a dumbbell in each hand with palms facing each other, arms extended above your lower chest
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbows throughout the entire movement
  • Lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc, feeling a stretch across the lower chest
  • Stop when your arms are roughly parallel to the floor or you feel a full stretch
  • Squeeze your chest and sweep the dumbbells back up in the same arc to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
