About this exercise

The donkey calf raise is a classic calf exercise performed in a bent-over position with hands resting on a support. This forward lean shifts the emphasis onto the gastrocnemius and allows a deep range of motion for a greater stretch and a strong contraction.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a bench or stable surface, then hinge forward at the hips and rest your forearms or hands on it
  • Position the balls of your feet on the edge of a step or raised surface, letting your heels hang off
  • Keeping your knees soft, push through the balls of your feet and rise as high onto your toes as possible
  • Squeeze your calves hard at the top of the movement
  • Lower your heels slowly below the level of the step to achieve a full stretch
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
