About this exercise

The dish hold — also known as the hollow body hold — is a foundational gymnastics core exercise where the body forms a shallow concave shape on the floor. The abs and hip flexors contract isometrically to press the lower back flat and lift the arms and legs off the ground simultaneously. Mastering this position is the basis for many advanced gymnastic and calisthenics skills.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back with legs together and arms extended overhead
  • Press your lower back firmly into the floor by engaging your abs
  • Lift your shoulders, arms, and both legs a few centimetres off the ground
  • Keep your legs straight and toes pointed, and arms close to your ears
  • Hold the position without letting the lower back arch away from the floor
  • Breathe steadily and maintain tension throughout the entire body for the prescribed duration
