Passive Hang

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Passive Hang.

EasyRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

A passive spinal decompression stretch performed by hanging freely from a pull-up bar with straight arms and a relaxed body. Gravity elongates the spine and stretches the lats, shoulders, and upper back over the hold duration.

How to Perform

  • Grip a pull-up bar slightly wider than shoulder-width using an overhand grip
  • Step or jump up so your arms are fully extended and your feet are off the floor
  • Let your body hang completely, releasing tension in your core and spine
  • Allow your shoulders to relax and rise naturally so gravity can fully decompress the spine
  • Breathe deeply and hold the position without swinging or engaging muscles
  • When the set time is up, gently engage your core before releasing the bar and stepping down
