About this exercise

The counterbalanced skater squat is a demanding single-leg squat variation where you hold a weight plate in front of your body to shift your center of mass forward, making it easier to maintain balance and achieve depth. It builds unilateral leg strength, hip stability, and knee control.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall holding a weight plate extended in front of you at approximately chest height
  • Shift your weight onto one leg and lift the opposite foot off the floor
  • Extend the free leg behind you as you hinge at the hip and lower your body
  • Bend the supporting knee and descend until the rear knee nearly touches the floor
  • Keep the plate extended forward throughout to maintain balance
  • Drive through the heel of the standing leg to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch legs
