Cobra Push-up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cobra Push-up.

About this exercise

The Cobra Push-up combines a standard push-up with a spinal extension into the cobra yoga pose, working the chest and triceps on the way down and the lower back on the upward extension. The flowing transition between the two positions makes it a full-body movement that trains pushing strength and back mobility simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Begin in a high plank position with hands under your shoulders and body in a straight line
  • Lower your chest to the floor in a controlled push-up descent
  • Instead of pushing straight back up, let your hips drop to the floor and extend your arms, lifting your chest and arching your spine into cobra pose
  • Hold the cobra position briefly, feeling the stretch through your abs and lower back
  • Reverse the movement by pressing back through a push-up, lifting your hips and returning to the high plank
  • Keep your core engaged throughout to protect the lower back during the extension
  • Complete each rep as a smooth, flowing transition between positions
