Swing Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Swing Curl.

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The cheat curl is a barbell biceps curl variation where a controlled hip and back swing generates momentum to lift a heavier load through the sticking point. While intentionally breaking strict form, the cheat is deliberate and controlled — not sloppy — allowing overload beyond what strict curls permit. It is an advanced hypertrophy technique used to target the biceps with supramaximal loads.

How to Perform

  • Stand holding a barbell with an underhand grip, arms extended
  • Begin the lift by swinging your hips and torso slightly forward and then backward to generate momentum
  • Use that momentum to drive the barbell upward past the sticking point
  • Squeeze your biceps hard at the top as your elbows rise to shoulder height
  • Lower the barbell slowly and under control, resisting the weight on the way down
  • Do not allow the back swing to become excessive — limit torso lean to avoid injury
  • Reset posture briefly before each rep

About the Swing Curl

The Swing Curl is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
