About this exercise

The cat stretch is a gentle spinal mobility exercise performed on all fours that rounds and flexes the spine to relieve tension in the lower and mid back. It is commonly used as a warm-up, cool-down, or rehabilitation drill and helps restore healthy range of motion through the entire vertebral column.

How to Perform

  • Start on all fours with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips
  • Keep your spine in a neutral position and take a deep breath in
  • As you exhale, round your back toward the ceiling by tucking your pelvis, drawing your navel toward your spine, and dropping your head
  • Hold the rounded position for 2–3 seconds, feeling the stretch through your back
  • Slowly return to a neutral spine position
  • Repeat for the desired duration or number of breath cycles
