About this exercise

The cat-cow lookback combines the classic spinal flexion and extension of the cat-cow stretch with a head rotation that follows the movement, adding a cervical mobility component. It gently mobilizes the entire spine and neck, making it ideal as a warm-up or cool-down drill.

How to Perform

  • Start on all fours with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips
  • Inhale, drop your belly toward the floor, lift your chest and tailbone (cow position)
  • As you arch, turn your head to look over one shoulder
  • Exhale, round your spine toward the ceiling, tuck your chin to your chest (cat position)
  • As you round, center your gaze back down
  • Alternate the lookback direction with each cow repetition
  • Move slowly and smoothly, breathing in rhythm with the stretch
