Cable Side Bend

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Side Bend.

MediumObliques

About this exercise

The cable side bend works the obliques unilaterally using a low-pulley cable machine, providing consistent lateral resistance as you bend to each side. The cable angle maintains tension at the top of the movement, making it more effective than a dumbbell side bend for oblique isolation.

How to Perform

  • Attach a single-D handle to the low pulley of a cable machine
  • Stand sideways to the machine, feet shoulder-width apart, and grasp the handle with the hand closest to the machine
  • Keep the other arm resting on your hip or raised for balance
  • Stand upright with a slight natural curve in your spine
  • Bend sideways away from the machine, lowering your opposite hip and extending the working side
  • Slowly return to the upright position by contracting the obliques on the cable side
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
