Cable Shoulder Press

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Shoulder Press.

MediumFront shoulders

About this exercise

The cable shoulder press targets the front and side deltoids using a cable machine, providing constant tension throughout the pressing movement. The cable setup allows for a natural arc of motion and keeps the muscles under load at both the bottom and top of the movement, unlike a barbell or dumbbell press.

How to Perform

  • Set the cable pulleys to the lowest position and attach a handle to each side
  • Stand in the center of the cable crossover station, grasp the handles at shoulder height with palms facing forward
  • Position your feet shoulder-width apart with a slight bend in the knees for stability
  • Press the handles directly overhead until your arms are fully extended, without locking the elbows
  • Hold the contracted position briefly at the top, then slowly lower the handles back to shoulder height
  • Keep your core braced and avoid arching your lower back during the press
