About this exercise

A lat isolation exercise performed standing with a rope attached to a high pulley, keeping the arms straight throughout. Eliminating elbow flexion removes biceps involvement and places near-constant tension on the lats through the full arc.

How to Perform

  • Attach a rope to the high pulley of a cable machine
  • Stand facing the machine with feet shoulder-width apart and a slight forward lean at the hips
  • Grasp the rope with both hands, arms extended forward at shoulder height
  • Keeping your arms straight, pull the rope down in a wide arc until your hands reach your hips
  • Spread the rope ends apart slightly at the bottom to increase lat contraction
  • Squeeze your lats, then slowly raise your arms back to the start position
