About this exercise

The cable pulldown is a fundamental back exercise performed on the lat pulldown machine. It targets the latissimus dorsi by pulling a bar or handle from overhead down toward the upper chest, building back width and upper-body pulling strength.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the lat pulldown machine and adjust the thigh pad to secure your legs
  • Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width with an overhand grip
  • Lean back slightly and keep your chest up throughout the movement
  • Pull the bar down toward your upper chest by driving your elbows toward your hips
  • Squeeze your lats at the bottom of the movement
  • Slowly return the bar to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
