Cable Lateral Raise

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Lateral Raise.

EasySide shoulders

About this exercise

The cable lateral raise is a single-arm shoulder isolation exercise performed with a low cable pulley. Unlike dumbbell raises, the cable maintains constant tension on the medial deltoid throughout the full arc of motion, making it especially effective for building width in the shoulders.

How to Perform

  • Set a low cable pulley and attach a single D-handle, then stand sideways to the cable machine
  • Grasp the handle with the hand farthest from the machine, keeping your arm slightly in front of your body
  • Stand tall with a slight lean away from the machine for better mechanics
  • Raise your arm out to the side in a wide arc until it reaches shoulder height, keeping a slight bend in the elbow
  • Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other arm

About the Cable Lateral Raise

The Cable Lateral Raise is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
