Cable Drag Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cable Drag Curl.

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The cable drag curl is a biceps exercise in which the bar is dragged up along the torso rather than following a standard arc, keeping the elbows traveling backward. This technique increases peak contraction and strongly isolates the long head of the biceps.

How to Perform

  • Attach a straight bar to a low pulley cable machine and stand facing the machine
  • Grip the bar with a shoulder-width underhand grip and pull it against your thighs
  • Initiate the curl by driving your elbows backward while dragging the bar up along your body
  • Keep the bar in contact with (or very close to) your torso throughout the movement
  • Continue curling until the bar reaches your lower chest and you feel maximum biceps contraction
  • Reverse the motion slowly, dragging the bar back down to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps

About the Cable Drag Curl

The Cable Drag Curl is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
