About this exercise

The Bulgarian split squat is a single-leg exercise with the rear foot elevated on a bench, placing intense demand on the glutes and quadriceps of the front leg. It builds unilateral strength, stability, and balance, and can be loaded with dumbbells.

How to Perform

  • Stand a stride in front of a bench, facing away from it
  • Rest the top of one foot behind you on the bench
  • Keep your torso upright and your core braced
  • Lower your hips by bending the front knee until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Drive through the heel of the front foot to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg, then switch sides
