About this exercise

Box step-ups build strength and power in the glutes and quads by driving your bodyweight up onto an elevated platform one leg at a time. They also challenge balance and can be loaded with dumbbells for added resistance.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a box or step with your feet hip-width apart
  • Place one foot flat on top of the box
  • Drive through the heel of the leading leg to step up and bring your trailing foot onto the box
  • Stand tall at the top with both feet on the platform
  • Step back down with the same leg under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, alternating legs as needed
