About this exercise

The bodyweight lateral walk targets the hip abductors and outer thighs by moving side to side in a controlled squat position. It is an effective activation and conditioning drill for the hips without any equipment.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and lower into a quarter-squat position
  • Keep your chest up, core braced, and toes pointing slightly outward
  • Step one foot out to the side, then follow with the other foot to return to hip-width stance
  • Continue stepping in the same direction for the desired number of reps or distance
  • Reverse direction and repeat, keeping tension in the hips throughout
  • Maintain consistent squat depth and avoid letting the feet come together completely
