Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Body Saw Plank.

MediumAbsMiddle back

About this exercise

The body saw plank is a dynamic plank variation where you shift your body forward and backward in a controlled sawing motion, increasing the anti-extension demand on the core compared to a static plank. The sliding movement forces the abs and deep stabilizers to work harder to prevent the lower back from collapsing.

How to Perform

  • Start in a forearm plank position with elbows under your shoulders and body in a straight line
  • Keep your core braced, glutes squeezed, and hips level throughout the movement
  • Push through your forearms to slide your body backward a few inches
  • Pull through your forearms to slide your body forward back to the starting position
  • Control the movement — avoid letting your hips pike up or sag down
  • Repeat the sawing motion for the desired number of repetitions
