About this exercise

Bench pull-ups are a bodyweight horizontal pulling exercise performed lying on your back under a sturdy bench. By gripping the bench edge and pulling your chest up to it, you train the back muscles with a row-like movement that requires no cable machine or pull-up bar.

How to Perform

  • Position a sturdy bench on a flat surface and lie on your back underneath it
  • Reach up and grip the edge of the bench with both hands, slightly wider than shoulder width
  • Extend your legs and keep your body in a straight line from head to heels
  • Pull your chest up toward the underside of the bench by driving your elbows back
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement
  • Lower yourself back to the starting position with control and repeat
