Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Seated Floor Press.

About this exercise

The Barbell Z Press is a seated overhead press performed on the floor with the legs extended straight out in front of you. Eliminating back support forces the core and hip flexors to stabilize while the anterior and lateral deltoids drive the bar overhead, making it both a strength and mobility challenge.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with legs extended straight in front of you and receive the barbell from a rack (or clean it to the front-rack position, then press overhead to start)
  • Hold the barbell with a shoulder-width overhand grip just above your collarbone / upper chest
  • Sit tall — no leaning back — with core braced and spine neutral
  • Press the bar straight overhead until elbows are fully locked out, moving your head slightly forward as the bar clears your face
  • Lower the bar back to the starting position at shoulder level under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
