About this exercise

The barbell wide shrug targets the upper trapezius muscles using a wider-than-shoulder-width overhand grip on a straight barbell. The wide grip shifts the stress slightly outward along the trapezius compared to a standard-width shrug.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and a barbell resting on the floor or in a rack at hip height
  • Grip the bar with a wide overhand grip, wider than shoulder-width
  • Lift or unrack the bar and stand upright with arms fully extended
  • Shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible
  • Hold briefly at the top and squeeze the trapezius muscles
  • Lower your shoulders back to the starting position in a controlled motion
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
