About this exercise

The barbell walking lunge is a compound lower-body exercise that loads a forward-stepping lunge pattern with a barbell across the upper back. It builds quadriceps, glute, and hamstring strength while challenging balance and hip stability through continuous alternating steps.

How to Perform

  • Position a barbell across the upper traps and stand with feet together
  • Step forward with your right foot into a long stride, planting the heel first
  • Lower the back knee toward the floor until both knees are at approximately 90 degrees
  • Drive through the front heel to stand, then immediately step the left foot forward into the next lunge
  • Keep the torso upright and core braced throughout the movement
  • Continue walking forward, alternating legs for the desired number of reps
