Barbell Cheat-Free Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Cheat-Free Curl.

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

A barbell biceps curl performed with strict technique — no body momentum, swinging, or hip drive — to fully isolate the biceps. The torso remains upright and stationary throughout the movement, often performed against a wall to enforce proper form.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a barbell with an underhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Press your back against a wall (optional) or keep your elbows pinned to your sides and your torso completely still
  • Take a deep breath and brace your core
  • Curl the bar upward by flexing your elbows, keeping your upper arms stationary and your back flat
  • Squeeze the biceps hard at the top of the curl
  • Lower the bar slowly and under full control until your arms are nearly fully extended
  • Avoid any rocking or shoulder involvement throughout each rep
