About this exercise

The barbell step-up is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed with a barbell across the upper back. Stepping up onto an elevated platform one leg at a time develops quad strength, glute activation, and single-leg stability. It is an excellent accessory movement for building balanced leg strength and correcting left-to-right imbalances.

How to Perform

  • Place a barbell across your upper traps and stand facing a sturdy step or box
  • Place one foot fully on the platform with your knee tracking over your toes
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to push your body up onto the box
  • Bring the trailing leg up to stand fully on the box, keeping your torso upright
  • Step back down with the trailing leg first, lowering in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other side
