About this exercise

The barbell standing twist is a rotational core exercise performed with a barbell resting across the upper back. Rotating the torso from side to side under load targets the obliques and trains anti-rotation stability throughout the core. It is a simple yet effective movement for building rotational strength and midsection muscular endurance.

How to Perform

  • Place a barbell across your upper traps and stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly soft
  • Keep your hips and lower body as still as possible throughout the movement
  • Rotate your torso to one side by contracting the obliques, moving the bar in an arc
  • Return to the center and then rotate to the opposite side in a controlled manner
  • Maintain an upright posture and avoid leaning or bending forward during the twist
  • Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions
