About this exercise

The barbell squat is a fundamental compound movement that loads the barbell across the upper back and drives the hips down into a deep squat position. It builds strength and muscle mass throughout the entire lower body and challenges core stability under heavy load. This exercise is widely regarded as one of the most effective movements for developing the quadriceps, glutes, and posterior chain.

How to Perform

  • Place the barbell on your upper traps and step back from the rack with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out
  • Brace your core and take a deep breath to create intra-abdominal pressure
  • Initiate the descent by pushing your knees out and sitting your hips back and down
  • Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor, keeping your chest tall and your back neutral
  • Drive through your heels to return to the starting position, maintaining tension throughout
  • Exhale at the top and reset your breath before the next repetition
