About this exercise

The barbell split clean is an Olympic weightlifting variation where you receive the bar in a split (lunge) stance rather than a squat. It is an excellent technique drill for developing timing, bar path, and the front rack position, and is sometimes used as a strength builder for athletes with limited squat mobility.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and grip the barbell with a clean grip (hands just outside the legs)
  • Set your back flat, chest up, and engage your core before initiating the pull
  • Push the floor away and extend hips and knees to pull the bar from the floor
  • As the bar passes mid-thigh, explosively shrug and drive the elbows forward and up
  • Split your feet forward and back as you drop under the bar, landing in a lunge position
  • Receive the bar in the front rack with elbows high and the bar resting on your front delts
  • Recover by bringing the front foot back first, then the rear foot to stand upright
  • Lower the bar under control to the floor
