About this exercise

The barbell snatch balance is an Olympic weightlifting technique drill performed with the bar resting on the back in the snatch-grip position. The lifter dips and drives the bar overhead while simultaneously dropping into a full overhead squat to receive it, training the speed and confidence required to get under the bar during the snatch. It improves overhead stability, squat mobility, and the timing of the drop.

How to Perform

  • Place the barbell across your upper back in the snatch-grip position, feet at squat-stance width
  • Dip slightly by bending your knees while keeping your torso completely vertical
  • Explosively push the bar overhead and simultaneously drop under it into a full squat
  • Press the bar to arm lockout as you descend, finishing in a deep overhead squat position
  • Stabilize the bar with active shoulders and a braced core at the bottom
  • Stand to full extension while maintaining the bar locked out overhead
  • Lower the bar under control back to the starting position on your back
