About this exercise

The barbell side bend is a standing oblique exercise in which a barbell rested across the upper back provides resistance as you laterally flex the spine. It targets the lateral abdominal wall and helps develop a stronger, more stable core.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and rest a barbell across your upper traps with a wide overhand grip
  • Keep your chest up, core braced, and hips facing forward throughout the movement
  • Slowly bend your torso directly to one side as far as range of motion allows, without rotating or leaning forward
  • Pause briefly at the bottom of the lateral bend
  • Return to the upright position by contracting the obliques on the working side
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch to the other side
