About this exercise

The barbell seated twist is a rotational core exercise that targets the obliques. A barbell resting on the upper back adds load to the twisting motion, increasing the demand on the lateral abdominal muscles.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a flat bench and rest a barbell across your upper traps with a wide overhand grip
  • Sit tall with your feet flat on the floor and your core braced
  • Keeping your hips square and facing forward, rotate your torso to one side as far as comfortably possible
  • Pause briefly at the end range, then rotate to the opposite side in a controlled manner
  • Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions
