About this exercise

A trapezius isolation exercise performed seated on a bench, with a barbell resting across the thighs. The seated position eliminates leg drive and momentum, placing direct, controlled stress on the upper traps.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the end of a flat bench with feet flat on the floor and hold a barbell across your thighs with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Keep your chest tall, back straight, and arms fully extended
  • Elevate your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible
  • Hold the peak contraction for one second, squeezing the traps hard
  • Lower the shoulders back down in a slow, controlled manner to full depression
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions without rolling the shoulders forward or backward
