About this exercise

A partial-range squat variation where the barbell is loaded on the upper back and the descent is limited to roughly a quarter of a full squat depth. This movement allows heavier loads to be used and is commonly employed to overload the quadriceps at the top of the range of motion or to develop starting strength.

How to Perform

  • Position the barbell on your upper traps in a high-bar or low-bar squat position
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and toes pointed slightly outward
  • Brace your core and take a deep breath before descending
  • Bend your knees and hips, lowering only until your thighs reach approximately 45 degrees (quarter of full depth)
  • Keep your chest up, back flat, and knees tracking over your toes
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up to the starting position
  • Exhale at the top of the movement
