About this exercise

The Pendlay Row is a strict barbell row performed from a dead-stop on the floor at the start of each rep, with the torso held parallel to the ground. It builds explosive pulling strength and develops the entire back musculature more thoroughly than a standard bent-over row.

How to Perform

  • Load a barbell on the floor and stand over it with feet shoulder-width apart
  • Hinge at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, keeping your back flat and neutral
  • Grip the bar with an overhand grip just outside shoulder width
  • Brace your core and explosively row the bar to your lower chest or upper abdomen
  • Drive your elbows back and squeeze the shoulder blades together at the top
  • Lower the bar completely to the floor and come to a full stop before the next rep
