About this exercise

The Barbell Muscle Clean is an Olympic weightlifting accessory movement in which the barbell is pulled from the floor to the front rack position without re-bending the knees after the initial drive, relying on upper-body pulling strength to complete the lift. It isolates and develops the pulling mechanics of the clean, building strength in the traps, upper back, and arms under load.

How to Perform

  • Set up with feet hip-width apart over the barbell, gripping just outside the knees with a hook grip
  • Keep your chest up, back flat, and hips below shoulder level at the start
  • Drive forcefully through the floor, extending through the hips and knees simultaneously
  • As the body reaches full extension, pull the bar aggressively upward along the torso
  • Do not re-bend the knees — use upper-body strength to continue pulling the bar as high as possible
  • Aggressively rotate your elbows under and forward to receive the bar in the front rack position
  • Stand tall with the bar resting on your front deltoids and fingertips
  • Lower the bar under control back to the starting position and reset
