About this exercise

A demanding compound exercise that combines a forward lunge with a rotational trunk twist while holding a barbell across the upper back. The rotation adds significant oblique and core engagement on top of the quad and glute demand of the lunge.

How to Perform

  • Stand with a barbell resting across your upper traps in a back-squat position, feet hip-width apart
  • Take a controlled step forward and lower into a lunge until both knees are at approximately 90 degrees
  • At the bottom of the lunge, rotate your upper body toward the front leg while keeping your hips square
  • Rotate back to center, then drive through the front heel to return to the starting position
  • Alternate legs each rep or complete all reps on one side before switching
  • Keep the barbell level throughout and brace your core firmly during the twist
