About this exercise

The barbell lunge is a compound lower-body exercise performed with a barbell across the upper back. It targets the quadriceps and glutes of the lead leg while engaging the hamstrings and core for stability. Alternating legs with each step makes it an effective unilateral movement for building balanced leg strength.

How to Perform

  • Position a barbell across your upper traps and step back from the rack
  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and core braced
  • Step forward with one foot, landing heel-first, and lower your back knee toward the floor
  • Descend until your front thigh is parallel to the floor and your back knee nearly touches the ground
  • Drive through the front heel to rise and bring the rear foot forward to meet the front foot
  • Immediately step forward with the opposite leg and repeat the movement
  • Continue alternating legs for the desired number of repetitions
