About this exercise

The barbell jump squat is a loaded plyometric exercise that develops explosive lower-body power and strength. A barbell is held across the upper back as in a back squat, and each rep ends with a full jump off the floor. It builds athletic power in the quadriceps, glutes, and calves while also challenging the core.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height and load it with a moderate weight
  • Step under the bar, position it across your upper traps, and unrack it
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and toes slightly turned out
  • Descend into a squat until thighs are parallel to the floor, keeping your chest up and core braced
  • Drive explosively through the floor, extending hips, knees, and ankles to jump off the ground
  • Land softly with slightly bent knees, absorbing the impact through your legs
  • Immediately descend into the next squat and repeat
